Northwestern Otero County in south central New Mexico... * Until 430 PM MDT. * At 229 PM MDT, A line of thunderstorms is moving into the Sacramento Mountains, with rainfall rates up to 4 inches per hour. While the heaviest rainfall will be fairly brief, these rainfall rates can still cause minor flooding in poor drainage areas. Worse flooding can be expected in arroyos that flow west, including Tularosa Creek. While heavy rain has moved east of Tularosa, low water crossings will become flooded as runoff makes its way into the Basin. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. * Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Mescalero, Tularosa, Bent, Burro Flats, La Luz, Lower Nogal Canyon, Upper Nogal Canyon, Mescalero Apache School, South Tularosa Canyon and Alamorosa. Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. Remain alert for flooding even in locations not receiving rain. Arroyos, streams, and rivers can become raging killer currents in a matter of minutes, even from distant rainfall.
