The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a
* Flash Flood Warning for...
Southeastern Cook County in northeastern Illinois...
* Until 1000 PM CDT.
* At 509 PM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated
thunderstorms producing rainfall rates up to 3 inches per hour
over much of the warned area. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have
fallen in portions of the warned area. Flash flooding is already
occurring and significant flash flooding is expected to begin
shortly. According to reports, sections of Interstate 94 are
closed through parts of the south side of Chicago.
HAZARD...Significant flash flooding.
SOURCE...Radar and automated gauges.
IMPACT...Rapid-onset, significant flooding of creeks, streams,
drainage ditches, low-lying areas, and poor drainage
areas. Widespread street and underpass flooding.
Possible flooding of structures. Possible flooding of
highways.
* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include...
Oak Lawn, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Roseland, Chicago Lawn,
Midway Airport, Englewood, South Shore, Burbank, Lansing, Oak
Forest, Harvey, Homer Glen, Blue Island and Dolton.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Flash Flood Warning means rapid-onset flooding is imminent or may
already be occurring. Persons along creeks, drainage ditches, and
other waterways should take immediate precautions to protect life
and property.
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.
